"This is Art," "Joy," and "Worth Less" are a new trio of self-portraits that playfully mix and match different pieces of my artistic puzzle, celebrating the joy of creating. In these works, I’ve turned bits and pieces from my fabric and clothing stash into a painted patchwork backdrop, inspired by the fun, chaotic charm of a "Crazy Quilt." These pieces bring together my love for textiles, sewing, and crafting, embracing the quirky, improvisational spirit of patchwork.
With these works, I’m cheerfully championing the
often-overlooked forms of art and craft, giving them the
recognition they deserve. "Joy" is all about celebrating the creative process—the thrill of playing with fabrics, offcuts, patterns, and prints, and the delight of getting lost in the details. "Worth Less" takes a more pointed approach. Sparked by disheartening stats about the gender pay gap in the arts, as revealed in the "Artists as Workers" study by David Throsby and Katya Petetskaya.* It’s a nod to the ongoing struggle for equality, with a wink at how undervalued women artists still are. By blending painting, craft, embroidery, and appliqué, I’m playfully questioning the pecking order of materials and sharing a little of my own story. Each piece tells a tale through its layers, patterns, and textures, celebrating the beauty and significance of every scrap of fabric while shining a light on the intricate dance between art, craft, and identity.
